toenail fungus laser treatment

Toenail fungus Cutera Laser Treatment

Changes in the color, thickness and quality of a toenail maybe caused by a fungal infection known as onychomycosis. In addition to being unsightly and embarrassing, fungal nails may cause pain therefore limiting ambulation, as well as, seeding infection to others.

Worldwide, studies estimate that fungal nail infections affect 10 percent of the population. However, podiatrists believe that because so many cases go unreported, the incidence is much higher.

One or more of the following symptoms may indicate a fungal nail infection:

– Thickened nail

– Distorted in shape or separated

– Brittle, crumbly or ragged nail

– Dull, with no luster or shine

– A dark color, caused by debris building up under nail

We are proud to add the new Genesis Plus Laser to our practice.

It is the only laser specifically designed to treat toenail fungus and does so safely with the greatest effectiveness. Previously, we were limited to topical medications with minimal action and oral medications with serious potential complications. The Genesis Plus represents the new Standard of Care in the treatment of onychomycosis.

Laser treatment now will help ensure clear nails by summer and get your feet sandal-ready.

Our Laser Practice

In Clinical Trials, the Cutera Genesis Plus was shown to provided up to an 85% cure rate in the fungal nails treated. The study utilized three treatments over the course of four months; the initial treatment and then the following treatments at two month intervals.

We are adhering to these protocols. In addition, we have developed an intra and post-treatment regimen to prevent the return of the fungal infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the laser work?
The laser penetrates the nail plate and heats the tissue, killing the fungus beneath. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear but the new nail growing out will be. After the initial treatment, two more treatments will be performed over two month intervals.

Is this treatment safe?
The Genesis Plus Laser has been both Canada Health and FDA approved. No side effects or adverse reactions have been reported.

Is the procedure painful?
Most people feel little discomfort. The level of heat generated will be constantly monitored and feedback controlled by you.

What can I expect immediately following the procedure?
Immediately following the procedure your nail may feel warm for a few minutes.

When will I see results?
Over the coming weeks to months, the new nail should begin to grow clear, healthy and fungus-free. On average, most patients will start to see results within eight to 10 weeks.

How soon can I return to normal activities?
The majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately after their treatment. Your podiatrist will discuss this in more detail.

Will the fungus come back?
The infection improves following one treatment but you will need to continue with home care techniques to reduce recurrence of the infection. There is a chance of re-infection because the fungus is present everywhere in the environment.

When can I paint my nails or have a pedicure?
You can apply polish immediately after the treatment. It is important to remove all nail polish and nail decorations the day before your treatment.

Is there a recovery period?
